Gunshot Fired From Queens Roof Hits Passing Car With Babies Inside: NYPD

Police are investigating after gunshots were fired from a Queens rooftop and at least one bullet hit a passing car, shattering a glass window onto two babies inside, authorities say.

The shot was fired from the roof of a high-rise building in the area of Beach 54th Street in Edgemere Friday afternoon, according to police.

The driver, Miriam Thomas, said she and her daughter-in-law were in the Nissan with two toddlers in the back: Thomas' 1-year-old granddaughter and the daughter-in-law's 4-month-old son.

Thomas was turning left onto Beach Channel Drive from Beach 54th Street when she heard at least six shots and one bullet went through the back window, then landed on the floor of the driver's seat, she said. Another bullet was later found in the car.

Thomas' daughter-in-law, who asked not to be identified, told NBC 4 New York in an exclusive interview that they were on their way to pick up her sister-in-law when the gunfire erupted.

"I (saw) the bullet coming toward the car, and I just ducked over, like over both the kids, and I had the car seat flipped in the car," she said.

"I flipped over the whole car seat, like over them, and I just laid there and I heard the glass shatter over my head," she said.

She looked up to make sure her baby, niece and mother-in-law were OK: "I just thank God that we're good, everybody is safe."

Thomas added, "Thank God they're OK. The first thing I was looking about was the kids, the baby. I said, 'The baby, the baby, the baby,' that's all I was saying."

The children were evaluated at the scene in ambulances with their mothers, and taken to the hospital as a precaution, Thomas and police said.

The spray of bullets hit several cars below, including the window and the front of a green cab and a red minivan. Police were inspecting the vehicles at the scene.

Police don't believe the family was the intended target and are continuing to look for the shooter.
