13-Year-Old Boy Brings Loaded Gun to Queens Middle School: Police

A 13-year-old boy was taken into custody after bringing a loaded gun to his Queens middle school Wednesday, authorities say.

Police say they got a call about a child with a weapon at MS 202 on Lafayette Street in Ozone Park shortly before 11:30 a.m. They met school safety agents at the building and apprehended the boy.

A .22-caliber gun was recovered with one round in the chamber, police said. No one was hurt.

The union that represents school security workers told NBC 4 New York that a tip from a teacher led them to the weapon. The union said it is now pushing for extra security measures at the school, which doesn't have any metal detectors.

The city's Department of Education called the case "troubling."

"Students and staff are safe, and we will work in close partnership with the NYPD as they conduct an investigation,” a spokeswoman said in a statement.

Some parents echoed the union's calls for metal detectors.

"I would like to see that change if it's going to keep my kid safe," said one mother.
