Grocery Clerk Shot Dead in Queens

A 65-year-old grocery store clerk in Queens was shot dead by a robber late Friday, police said.

The gunman walked into Melani Grocery in Jamaica at about 10 p.m. and demanded cash, according to the New York Post.

When Jorge Marte, the clerk, tried to flee, he was shot in the chest, the Post said.

He died at Jamaica Hospital.

Store owner Jose Rosario, 59, told the Post that Marte was a childhood friend and a "good man."

He was also the second clerk to die in a robbery there, Rosario said. Cesar Rubio was killed in 1996.
