Children Playing at Long Island Park Find Grenade: Police

Police say they've safely destroyed a grenade children found while playing at a Long Island park over the weekend.

The children were playing in the water at Lt. Michael Murphy Memorial Park in Lake Ronkonkoma around 7 p.m. Sunday when they picked up the device, which had its pin intact, according to Newsday.

The children told authorities they thought it was a rock. Police say it wasn't clear if the grenade was live and it appeared to have been in the water for some time.

The beach was evacuated and police used a robot to place it in a hole, where it was destroyed.
No injuries were reported.

The park is named for a former U.S. Navy Seal who was killed in action in Afghanistan.
