Ailing Gray Seal Pup Rescued Off Long Island Beach

A marine animal rescue group says a gray seal pup is being treated after being rescued from a beach in Hampton Bays on eastern Long Island.

A spokeswoman for the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation says the 1-month-old male was first seen Monday behind the Quantuck Beach Club on Dune Road in Hampton Bays.

On Tuesday, a foundation biologist and two interns determined the pup — dark and light gray — was lethargic and underweight.

It is being treated at the foundation's Riverhead facility.

Spokeswoman Rachel Bosworth says there have been other seal pup sightings in Westhampton Beach, Southampton and Montauk. They appear to be in good condition.

She says the public should stay at least 150 feet from the federally protected animals. Human interaction can be harmful.
