Harlem Grandma Dies After Pipe Attack; Man Arrested

A 62-year-old grandmother died after an emotionally disturbed man beat her with a pipe in Harlem early Wednesday, police said.

Police officers were called to 680 St. Nicholas Ave. for an assault in progress at about 8 a.m. Responding officers allegedly found 27-year-old Dominick Anderson attacking his grandmother with a metal pipe. The grandmother, identified as Beverly Holmes, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Six police officers were injured as they tried to subdue Anderson with pepper spray, police said. They were taken to St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital. One officer was struck in the head with the pipe and was undergoing CAT scans, police said.

Anderson was arrested and charged with attempted murder and resisting arrest. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.
