Girl, 9, Found Dead in Bathroom of Queens Home: NYPD

Authorities are questioning the girl's missing stepmother who is a "person of interest"

Police are investigating the death of a nine-year-old girl whose body they found inside a first-floor bathroom of a Queens residence, authorities said.

Authorities are questioning the girl's missing stepmother who is a "person of interest," according to law enforcement sources. However, she is not yet facing any charges, and the girl's death hasn't been deemed a homicide.

Police discovered the girl's body at about 6 p.m. Friday while responding to a report of a unconscious person at the home on 112th Street in the Richmond Hill neighborhood.

Investigators said there was no sign of trauma and a medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The girl's identity hasn't been disclosed by police, but family members told NBC 4 New York that the girl's name is Ashdeep Kaur and that she moved to the United States from India about a month ago.

The girl had been locked in the bathroom for at least two hours, the family said.

Ashdeep had stayed with her cousin's family for the past three days, and didn't want to go home to her stepmother, her family said. She reluctantly returned home Friday, her family said.
