Girl, 12, Shot as Youth Event Turns Violent

Two teenagers are in custody after a 12-year-old girl was shot and wounded late Saturday afternoon when gunfire erupted at an outdoor youth event in Queens, police said.

The girl, who was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, was wounded in the leg; her injuries were described as non-life threatening.

She was shot in the Arverne section of the Rockaways at an event being held at a neighborhood playground.

According to police, officers responding to the scene were given a description by witnesses, and they spotted a man running away and jumping over a fence.

Some other officers canvassing the area saw an 18-year-old fitting the same description, and observed him handing a gun to a 16-year-old girl, the NYPD said.

The 18-year-old man was arrested on charges including attempted murder and assault, and the 16-year-old was arrested on weapons charges, police said.

"All the kids were scared, all the kids were crying," said Lynette Mitchum, who witnessed the shooting. "It was really sad. It was a sad thing because it was going very well and it just ended the day for the kids."
