At Least 15 Hurt as Buses Collide in Lincoln Tunnel: Port Authority

Traffic mishaps also caused gridlock on the George Washington Bridge and Van Wyck Expressway

What to Know

  • The buses crashed in the tunnel's center tube at about 8 a.m. The tube was closed for a time, but later reopened
  • 15 people were hurt, but none of them were thought to have serious injuries.
  • Major delays were also reported on the George Washington Bridge and Van Wyck Expressway to JFK in unrelated incidents

At least 15 people were hurt when one NJ Transit bus rear-ended another in the Lincoln Tunnel Monday morning, creating a traffic nightmare, officials said.

The center lane of the crossing was closed after the accident shortly after 7:30 a.m., causing delays of more than two hours.

NJ Transit spokesman Jim Smith said the route 114 bus hit the route 190 bus; there were 103 passengers on the buses. Fourteen of the passengers were treated at the scene; the driver of one of the buses was taken to a hospital, but he is expected to be OK, officials said.

The collision was one of many traffic mishaps contributing to a nightmare of a morning commute Monday.

Delays on the George Washington Bridge topped 70 minutes due to a disabled tractor-trailer on the Cross Bronx Expressway near Jerome Avenue, while cars ferrying travelers to JFK were being detoured from the Van Wyck Expressway to service roads and the JFK Expressway as police investigated the scene where a pedestrian was hit by a car. The pedestrian was taken to Jamaica Hospital.

Drivers heading toward any of those roadways were advised to find alternate routes or use mass transit.
