Man Charged With DUI After SUV Plows Into Building

The driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and no one else was hurt

A Connecticut man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after driving his SUV into a building across from Westport fire department headquarters, authorities said.

Police say George Arias, 53, was still in his Ford Explorer when emergency personnel arrived at the scene early Thursday. He was pulled out of the car with minor injuries and refused medical attention, authorities said.

Officials said Arias' car left the road and severed a telephone wire before it crashed into the building on Post Road. It came to rest in the corner of the building, damaging some outside lighting along a walkway, police said.

The town building official, building owner, a utility company and a flatbed wrecker were called to the scene to stabilize the building and make sure the leaning telephone pole was not a safety hazard. The building was then sealed up with a tarp until repairs could be made, officials said.

Arias, of Bridgeport, was charged with DUI and failure to drive in established lane. He was released after posting $500 bond and is due back in court next week.
