Gas Prices Fall Below $2 Per Gallon in New Jersey

Some New Jersey drivers can breathe a sigh of relief at the pump this Tuesday.

Several stations between Lakewood and Edison showed prices under $2 per gallon for regular-grade gas.

Three stations within a mile-and-a-half stretch of Route 9 in Lakewood were selling at $1.97 per gallon, including a BP station off Main Street.

BP manager Mike Gill says his customers are taking of the low prices, especially during the holidays.

"We are the cheapest gas in town, so people fill up, especially for Christmas and New Years," he said.

The average price of gas in New Jersey is $2.38.  While some drivers said they're using the extra 41 cents they save per gallon to drive more, others are using the savings to buy gifts for their loved ones.

"It helps with the holiday season, more money for presents," said driver Miriam Sokol.

Nationally, gas prices are at their lowest since May 2009, dropping by 25 cents in the last two weeks alone, Reuters reported. The average price of gasoline fell to $2.47 per gallon, which is more than $1.25 per gallon since a peak earlier this year, according to Reuters.
