A 24-inch gas main ruptured during construction in a New Jersey neighborhood Wednesday, prompting authorities to evacuate the immediate area and causing delays on trains that normally run through the township, officials said.
Multiple fire units responded to the main break on Spring Street and Millburn Avenue, not far from the NJ Transit tracks, late in the morning.
About 10 buildings were evacuated shortly before noon, but the 30 people affected were allowed back inside about 45 minutes later, Deann Muzikar, a spokeswoman for PSE&G, said.
No injuries were reported. Muzikar said a contractor was working at the intersection and struck a gas line, "causing gas to blow." Utility crews were working to make necessary repairs, she added.
NJ Transit said at least one of its trains that pass through the area was delayed because of emergency activity. Some streets were also closed to traffic.
