Death of Chronically Ill 5-Year-Old Boy Ruled a Homicide: Sources

The medical examiner has determined that a 5-year-old chronically ill boy who died in a hospital earlier this year was killed, sources familiar with the investigation tell NBC 4 New York.

Garnett Spears died at Westchester Medical Center in January. Before he passed away, the hospital told police that his sodium levels were suspiciously high. That was part of the reason an investigation was launched into his death, which was first reported in February by Lohud.com.

Garnett lived with his mother Lacey Spears at the Fellowship Community complex in Chestnut Ridge, a self-described social service care community licensed by the state Department of Health.

Lacey Spears reportedly described his final days and previous illnesses on Facebook.Law enforcement sources previously said her Facebook postings were part of the investigation.

Sources said the mother left the state after his death.
