Legendary hip-hop pioneer and MC Guru is undergoing surgery today at an area hospital following cardiac arrest,  according to multiple news reports.

Much is still not known about the condition of the rapper, born Keith Elam in Boston, whose nonchalant monotone-style helped define the sound of New York -- and East Coast -- hip hop.

But according to Guru's long-time Gang Starr deejay and collaborator DJ Premier, 43-year-old Guru suffered a heart attack over the weekend and will undergo surgery today at a New York-area hospital, according to Billboard magazine and Hot 97's Miss Info.

Twitter is abuzz with well-wishes and updates on Guru's condition as hip-hop drummer ?uestlove, rapper Jean Grae and thousands more tweeted their thoughts, concern and appreciation from around the world.
