Freight Train Derails on LIRR

A freight train derailed on the Long Island Railroad early Friday morning, causing service to be suspended between Suffolk and Nassau counties for hours, the MTA says.

One car on a 38-car train carrying stone came off the tracks around 2 a.m. west of the Brentwood station on the Ronkonkoma branch, officials say.

No one was injured.

Service on the branch was suspended between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma in both directions for a few hours, MTA officials say. Trains started running again about 5 a.m., officials say.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
