NJ Standoff Ends With Man Dead, His Mother Wounded

Sussex County prosecutors say the standoff started around 8:15 p.m. Saturday

Authorities say a lengthy standoff at a New Jersey home ended when an armed man fatally shot himself after wounding his mother and taking his father hostage.

Sussex County prosecutors say the standoff started around 8:15 p.m. Saturday, when police responded to a 911 call from a Franklin home. When officers arrived, Anne Elekes ran outside before being shot by her 53-year-old son, Michael Elekes.

Negotiators were eventually able to convince the son to release his father, who was unharmed. But when authorities finally entered the home early Sunday, they found the Michael Elekes dead inside.

It was not clear what sparked the standoff, and authorities would not release the name of the gunman or his parents. Police said Anne Elekes remained hospitalized Sunday in serious but stable condition.
