Flugelhorn Thief at Large Following Subway Mugging

Police are searching for a thief who made off with a musician's pricey flugelhorn after he fell asleep on the subway.

Now, in case you're rusty in the horn department, a flugelhorn is a valved bugle developed in Germany. It has a conical bore. The bugle had no valves and therefore could produce only the natural harmonics of the tube, giving it a mellower sound than the trumpet.

The 29-year-old musician and victim was on the N-train bound for Astoria last week and  he nodded off on the train. When he awoke as the train approached the Ditmars Boulevard station, he noticed his black leather case missing.

The case held both the curvy, Swiss-made horn and a Bach Stradivarius trumpet, police said. The trumpet retails for about $2,000 and the flugelhorn more than $5,000. He reported the thefts on Monday.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Crime Stoppers hot line at 1-800-577-TIPS.
