The subway station serving the N, Q and R lines on 23rd Street was temporarily closed after a water main burst Friday morning, flooding the subway station and forcing an evacuation.

Emergency management officials say there were 2 feet of water on the subway tracks after the 36-inch 98-year-old pipe busted Friday morning. The water was turned off before noon, and crews worked into the night to clear mud and other debris from the street.

Water flowed into the 23rd Street station and down the subway stairs like a waterfall, one witness told NBC 4 New York.

Normal service was restored on the Q line and express service on the N line and the R train was diverted. All trains were bypassing the 23rd Street station.

"I'm probably going to have the 1 train," said one stranded rider. "I'll walk down there. Not something I want to do on a day like this, 'cause I'm cold."

The MTA had announced several line closures and detours. Check here for the latest.
