First West Nile Mosquitoes of Season Detected in NYC

The New York City health department says it's detected the first mosquitoes with West Nile virus of the season.

The infected mosquitoes were found in the Rossville section of Staten Island. No human cases have been reported to date.

The health department says it will spray pesticide to target mosquitoes if persistent West Nile activity is detected, and continue to apply larvicide in catch basins, marshland and other areas with standing water.

Not everyone infected with West Nile virus will become ill, but the virus can cause serious complications, including neurological diseases, and can also cause a milder flu-like illness.

People should take simple precautions to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes, inclusing wearing insect repellent and covering arms and legs.

Mosquito season in New York City typically spans from April through September.
