A 59-year-old woman died and a 47-year-old man is in critical condition after a fire broke out in a six-story apartment building in Brooklyn early Monday, authorities say.
Both victims were found unconscious inside the building on Georgia Avenue in East New York after firefighters responded to the second-floor blaze around 3 a.m. They were taken to the hospital, where one died.
Authorities say one person who lives on the floor jumped out a window to escape the flames; a man and his children used the fire escape to get out.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
