Diesel Crane Causes Smoky Conditions in Midtown Manhattan: Officials

A smoke-spewing diesel crane worried some New Yorkers enjoying a warmer than seasonal day in Bryant Park Thursday afternoon, but Buildings Department officials say there was no cause for alarm.

The crane perched atop a building on West 40th Street began pouring out white exhaust at about 2 p.m., according to DOB officials. The exhaust poured down toward the ground level, creating smoky conditions in the park and streets below.

Fire officials say there was no danger to the public from the smoke.

That didn't stop some people from taking to Twitter and Instagram with their concerns.

"Not sure what's happening up there, but it doesn't look or smell good from down here," Caitlin M. Santiago said in an Instagram post

Another person, Theresa Perkins, said that the smoke spoiled her lunch plans.

"Lunch break inside today - it's getting very smoky near @bryantparknyc...#WhatsOnFire?" she tweeted.
