Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the federal government has approved the environmental impact statement for a new Tappan Zee Bridge in the New York suburbs.
The governor says the approval means the state can award a contract to one of three bidders.
He says the financing of the bridge still has to be worked out. The state has asked for a federal loan of between $2.4 and 2.9 billion.
Cuomo says federal approval of the environmental report was the hurdle that worried him the most.
The environmental report concluded that the bridge will have no major, lasting environmental effects. It included a long list of measures that will be taken during construction to protect fish and people.
