Fatal Hit and Run Accident on Long Island

The woman was struck at approximately 1:40 a.m., on the westbound lane of Sunrise Highway in West Babylon

Police are investigating a hit and run accident on Long Island that left one woman dead early Sunday morning.
 
The woman, identified by police as 30-year-old Jennifer Wheeler, of North Lindenhurst, was struck at approximately 1:40 a.m., on the westbound lane of Sunrise Highway in West Babylon. Police said Wheeler was a pedestrian.

A passing driver observed Wheeler leaning against the center median of the highway and turned around to check on her, but by the time he got to her she was lying in the left lane dead, police said.

The car that hit her fled the scene. There is currently no information on the type of car involved in the accident. An investigation is ongoing.

Police are asking anyone who was in that area and saw something that might help track down the driver that hit Wheeler to call the Suffolk County Police First Squad at 631 854-8152 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
