1 Killed, 10 Hurt in Multiple-Car Crash on Staten Island: Cops

One person was killed and 10 others injured Sunday in a chain-reaction crash involving as many as 10 cars on Staten Island, police said.

The accident happened at about 2 p.m. at the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Travis Avenue, according to police.

Witnesses told NBC 4 New York that it appeared that the driver of a Lexus pulled into the intersection and went airborne after hitting several cars. The Lexus then struck several other vehicles.

The woman who was driving the Lexus was hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

"Out of control. The worst thing I've ever possibly seen in my life," said Michael Pavolvsky, whose car was struck. His passenger and his 1-year-old baby weren't injured.

Police at the scene tested everyone involved in the accident for alcohol consumption.

Ten people were taken to area hospitals. At least three people suffered serious injuries, police said.
