A proposed $100 million housing development could fundamentally alter a sleepy hamlet on Long Island, civic leaders say.
The development, called the Arboretum Project, could bring 292 homes and condominium units to Farmingville, along with restaurants, office space and a pond. The proposal was first reported Thursday by Newsday.
Officials in the Suffolk County hamlet said that the the development could draw people to the area that was once thought of more as an exit on the Long Island Expressway than a destination.
"It's trying to give a new face to Farmingville," said Brookhaven Councilman Kevin LaValle.
"We want people to drive through and stay in Farmingville as a destination," said civic leader Marisa Pizza.
The 65-acre development is slotted to sit behind a post office and across from the 102-acre Farmingville Hills Country Park.
The development would be broken up into 501 homes, 178 apartments and 63 townhouses. It would also include a 7,500-square-foot clubhouse and 7.28-acre park with a pond.

The development is expected to be discussed during a Brookhaven Town Hall public hearing on March 22.
