Fake Broker Arrested in NYC Craigslist Apartment Scam Stole Nearly $6,000: Police

A 23-year-old woman has been arrested after allegedly posing as a real estate agent and scamming nearly $6,000 from three prospective renters in the Bronx.

Police say Monessa Samuels showed the three victims, who were between 27 and 29 years old, a basement apartment at 957 Van Nest Avenue between Feb. 25 and 28.

The victims had gotten the information about the apartment on Craigslist and spoken to a man who instructed them to meet Samuels, his alleged daughter, at the apartment, police say.

Samuels met with all three victims at the apartment and collected deposits from each for a total of $5,750, according to police. Later, when the victims tried to contact the supposed broker, she could not be reached and they were unable to get their money back.

Samuels is charged with grand larceny and petit larceny. It was not immediately clear if she had an attorney.
