Massive Subway Delays Tuesday Morning Following FDNY Activity

Massive subway delays hit New York commuters Tuesday morning following a subway track fire and mechanical problems at Second Avenue.

The FDNY response to a fire at the 81st Street-Museum of Natural History stop in the Upper West Side caused mass MTA service changes on the A, C, B and D lines about 6 a.m. There were also delays on the E, F, 2 and 5 trains.

Although service was restored on the A, C, B and D lines before 7 a.m., extensive delays were reported, and commuters were advised to leave extra travel time following the disrupted service.

Just after 8 a.m. Manhattan-bound F trains were sent running on the A line between Jay Street and West Fourth Street due to a train with mechanical problems. The regular F service was restored but the E and F lines were also running with delays, and the 2 and 5 trains were also hit with delays.

The B and C subway lines were initially suspended in both directions due to the fire department activity, but those lines were restored.

There was initially no downtown service from 125th Street to 59th Street on the A or D lines and some uptown trains were terminating at 59th Street-Columbus Circle. That service was also restored, but delays were expected there as well.

Commuters wanting to get around delays were advised to use the M10 bus service on Central Park West from 125th Street to 59th Street in addition to the 1, 2 or 3 lines that make nearby stops.
