Ex-Convict Accused of Stealing Police Cruiser from Bronx Station House

An ex-convict has been accused of stealing an NYPD cruiser from a precinct parking lot before crashing it into four parked vehicles in the Bronx on Sunday morning, police said.

Rubin Fernandez, 31, is charged with grand larceny, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief after the marked police car was stolen from the 50th precinct parking lot near West 236th Street and Kingsbridge Avenue in University Heights on Sunday morning. 

Authorities said that the keys were in the ignition at the time of the theft. The man's joyride ended when he allegedly crashed the cruiser into four empty parked vehicles near Fordham Road and Sedgwick Avenue.

The thief, who matched Fernandez's description, was last sen walking from the wreckage and getting into another vehicle.

Authorities said there were no injuries as a result of the crash.

Attorney information for Fernandez wasn't immediately available. He had been released from from prison in May after serving a sentence for robbery, grand larceny of an automobile and unlawful imprisonment.
