Elderly N.J. Woman Robbed at Knifepoint Inside Senior Building

An elderly woman was robbed at knifepoint on Sunday inside her home at a senior citizens apartment building in Jersey City, according to a published report.

The 84-year-old woman, a resident of Grandview Terrace, heard a knock on her door around 10:15 a.m. Sunday, and someone announce “I’m security,” according to the Jersey Journal.

When she opened the door a man with a knife forced his way inside, grabbing the victim by her neck and throwing her down on the bed, the newspaper reports.

The robber took $300 from her purse as well as her Social Security and Medicare cards, the report said.

The newspaper says a tenant group has been vocal about a need for improved security at the 285-unit, age-restricted building. Last summer, the owner of the retirement home announced new security measures, including security cameras on each floor, new swipe keys and an overnight security guard.

When reached for comment, the building’s management told NBC New York that "everything was turned over to police," but otherwise refused to comment.

The robber was described as being between 40 to 50 years old. He was wearing a baseball cap, blue pants with white stripes, white sneakers and a button-up short-sleeve T-shirt, the report said.
