Elderly Man Offered Kids Candy, Was Caught in Lewd Act: Police

An elderly Long Island man was arrested on a public lewdness charge after he allegedly offered candy to children from inside his car and then was caught by an adult performing a lewd act.

Galip Gulmez, 87, was sitting in his gray 2011 Subaru by West Neck Beach in Lloyd Harbor the afternoon of Aug. 10 when he offered candy to nearby children, Suffolk police said.

A woman who was with the children approached the car to intervene and noticed Gulmez wasn't wearing pants and was masturbating, police said.

Police arrested Gulmez at his Lloyd Harbor home Monday on charges of public lewdness and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was being held at the Second Precinct police station and couldn't immediately be reached for comment. He's scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sept. 1.
