A lifelike fake plastic explosive used for bomb training at Israeli airports was placed at an El Al terminal at JFK airport Thursday causing a police response, officials said.

Security officials at Kennedy Airport deny they ever received any notification from the airline of any planned exercise and the NYPD bomb squad was called to investigate.  Security officials at JFK said no one from the airline or the airport appears to have known about any test or plans for fake devices to be sent through the airport.

The fake devices were made of clay and were meant to look like a sophisticated plastic explosives.  They were contained in a diplomatic pouch.

Several officials said the diplomatic pouch had sat at an El Al airport office at JFK for several days before being discovered.  Port Authority and New York City police as well as TSA security officials investigated before giving an all clear Thursday.

An Israeli Consulate spokesman referred calls to El Al.  An El Al airline spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment.
