Police in New Jersey say a 22-year-old drunk driver swerved off the road Thursday evening and ran down a 28-year-old woman standing on a sidewalk, also crashing into a light post, tree and utility pole.

The woman was transported to the Hackensack University Medical Center and is still in critical condition. She was standing on the sidewalk near St. Mary's High School in East Rutherford about 7:45 p.m. when a 2006 Lexus Sedan swerved off the road and plowed into her, according to the Bergen County prosecutor's office.
The car's driver, 22-year-old Victor Kwak, was arrested after the crash and is charged with aggravated assault by auto, DWI within 1,000 feet of a school and several other moving violations including DWI and reckless driving, according to prosecutors.
Officers suspected Kwak of driving drunk, and took a blood sample. He is being held at Bergen County Jail on $75,000 bail.
Kwak's first court appearance is Sept. 4 at the East Rutherford Municipal Court. It's not immediately clear if he has an attorney.
