Man Fatally Shot by Cops in NJ While Stabbing Father-in-Law: DA

Police in East Orange, N.J. fatally shot a man when they discovered him stabbing his father-in-law and he refused to comply with the officers' orders to stop, authorities said.

The East Orange police officers responded to a 911 call for the stabbing in the 400 block of Norwood Ave. at about 7:30 a.m., the prosecutor's office said. When officers ordered the suspect, 32-year-old Karlando Roberts, to drop the knife, he continued to stab the victim.

That's when officers shot Roberts, the prosecutor said. He was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The prosecutor and police are investigating the case, which will be presented to an Essex County grand jury.

The father-in-law, who has not been identified, was admitted to the hospital with multiple stab wounds and is in stable condition, the prosecutor's office said.
