Police on Long Island say a 31-year-old man killed himself after fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend.

Police say James Schultz was found dead Monday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at his East Northport home where he lives with his parents.

Police say Schultz had earlier picked up his 13-month-old son from his ex-girlfriend's home. The son was not injured. When police tried to contact the boy's mother, 23-year-old Katherine Farrell, police say they found her stabbed to death in her St. James home.

Police believe Schultz stabbed the woman when he went to pick up his son.

Child Protective Services was notified. The investigation is continuing.
