Drunk Man Head Butts Cop, Injures EMT: Police

Police say a drunk man who was causing a scene at a West Nyack Mall head butted an officer and injured an EMT as they were trying to subdue him.

Officers received a call around 6 p.m. Tuesday that a drunk man was displaying disorderly conduct at the Pallisades Mall.

Police say they found 31-year-old Daniel McCormack of Haverstraw, who appeared to be intoxicated and upset that officers had been called to the scene.

While cops tried to subdue him, McCormack allegedly head butted one of the officers and tried to run away. The other officers restrained him and placed him under arrest, but he remained aggressive as he was being taken to police headquarters and while he was being placed in a jail cell.

Officers used pepper spray to try to keep him from injuring himself, but police say he had to be taken to the hospital to be subdued. However, as he was being taken to Nyack Hospital in a volunteer ambulance, McCormack allegedly grabbed an EMT’s hand and tried to bend back her fingers, injuring her before an officer riding in the ambulance was able to stop him.

McCormack was treated at the hospital and taken back to police headquarters to be placed in custody on several charges, including felony assault, resisting arrest and harassment. His bail was set at $50,000. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

The officer who was head butted did not require medical attention. The EMT was treated for a minor hand injury at the hospital and later released.
