Alleged DUI Driver Threatens Cops After Crash Near Holland Tunnel: Port Authority

A driver allegedly under the influence of drugs struck two parked cars and a Port Authority police car in downtown Manhattan Wednesday evening, then made threatening remarks toward police as he was taken into custody, authorities say.

The 24-year-old driver was driving on Varick Street near Watts Street, just by the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, when he went into the fire lane and hit two parked cars, according to Port Authority Police spokesman Joe Pentangelo. He continued on and then struck a marked Port Authority police car.

The driver, who was operating an Audi with Pennsylvania plates, made anti-police statements to officers, according to Pentangelo. He said he had smoked the hallucinogenic drug PCP and that he wanted to "take out a police officer."

Police found what appeared to be synthetic marijuana inside the car.

The suspect was arrested and taken to an area hospital. He's facing charges of attempted aggravated assault, terroristic threats and reckless endangerment.
