Dorm Fire Forces Evacuation at Stony Brook

A fire at Stony Brook University forced students to evacuate from one of the college's residence halls over the weekend.

The fire was reported Saturday evening in a dorm room in one of the 28 residence halls on the Long Island college campus.

There was no one in the dorm room when the fire began, university officials said.

The fire was extinguished and there were no injuries reported, but the building remained evacuated, a college spokeswoman said. Students were housed for the night in other dorm rooms on campus.

The 1,039-acre college campus is located about 60 miles from New York City and has an enrollment of more than 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
