More than 40 dogs were removed from a Long Island home so filthy that haz-mat teams had be called in, authorities say.
Police were called to the Powers Avenue home in East Meadow Thursday afternoon for an elderly woman in need of assistance, officials said.
The officers found at least 40 dogs in the home, most of them covered in feces, urine and fleas. Haz-mat was called in because of the strong odor.
The Nassau County SPCA helped remove the animals from the home, and the fire marshal condemned the building.
The elderly woman living in the home was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Charges have not yet been filed.
The small dogs were headed to a Hempstead animal shelter.
