A Brooklyn doctor who was on his way to prison for billing fraud stopped off at a cemetery and killed himself, rather than face jail.
The Daily News reports that surgeon Gregory Perrier was being driven by his lawyer to a federal prison in Orange County on Friday when he asked to visit his parents' grave at Cypress Hills Cemetery.
When he got there, he shot himself. Perrier pleaded guilty three years ago. He was scheduled to report to prison at noon to begin serving a one-year term.
Perrier's previous lawyer, Edward Sapone, tells the newspaper that his client had persuaded a judge to delay his sentencing twice so he could assist in disaster relief in Haiti.
The doctor lived in Dix Hills, on Long Island. He was 46.
