Long Island Man Dubbed Country's “No. 1 Deadbeat Parent” Gets Jail

Robert Sand, whom authorities had once called the "most wanted deadbeat parent," pleaded guilty to failing to pay child support

A Long Island man once dubbed by prosecutors as the country's most wanted deadbeat parent for owing more than $1.2 million in child support has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

Robert Sand had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to pay child support. He has three children from two failed marriages.

At his sentencing Tuesday, he also was ordered to pay more than $900,000 in unpaid support.

Sand had spent years on the run, fleeing first to Florida and then to Thailand.

He was arrested in December 2012 after entering the Philippines without proper identification. He was sent to Los Angeles where he was arrested by federal marshals, and then extradited to New York.
