Police in Connecticut are investigating after two dead skunks were found on a telephone pole that had a sign attached to it reading "Obama Stinks."
One of the dead skunks was found at the base of the pole near Park and Jackman avenues in Fairfield after a woman called police to report the grisly discovery around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday.
The other skunk had been nailed to the pole about 4 feet above the ground and had heavy string around its neck, police said. A laminated 8-by-11-inch paper sign that contained the anti-Obama message and depicted an American flag with a hammer and sickle in place of the stars was fixed to the pole above it.
Secret Service has been alerted because of the message, and police tell NBC 4 New York they are taking the discovery seriously.
"There are ways for you to let your views known," Fairfield Police Lt. James Perez said. "This is not one of them. This is definitely not one of them."
"It's one thing to make a political statement," Perez added. "It's another thing to make a political statement and involve an innocent animal."
Matthew Katz siad he noticed a strong, consistent skunk smell as he took his dog for walks over the last few days. He was disgusted to learn it was coming from the bloody political statement. Now Katz is considered about what the perpetrator might do next.
"He committed animal abuse and I have a dog and anything against animals is horrible," Katz said.

It wasn't clear how long the skunks had been on the pole, located on a busy street near a residential area, before the woman reported the sighting to police. Perez said if the display was intended as a prank, it didn't make anyone laugh.
"When you start resorting to something so outrageous as taking an animal and killing it and posting it on a pole, I think that's pretty serious," Perez said.
A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
