Dead Dolphin Found in Hudson River Upstate

Officials say it's extremely rare for a dolphin to be that far north in the river

A boater found a 10-foot-long dolphin dead in the Hudson River upstate Thursday, according to Rockland County officials.

The dolphin was a Risso's dolphin, which have large dorsal fins relative to other dolphins. Authorities said many people reported seeing the animal swimming in the river on Memorial Day; it was found dead in Haverstraw Bay.

The dolphin is believed to have died sometime between Monday and Thursday.

It is extremely rare for a dolphin to make its way that far north up the Hudson, according to Sgt. John Murphy of the Rockland County Sheriff’s Marine Unit.

A necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
