Dashcam Captures Tractor-Trailer Plowing Through Cars, Motorists Rushing to Help

The mayor of a town in New York’s Southern Tier is calling motorists heroes after dashcam footage captured them jumping to action to help pull a woman from a burning vehicle after a 10-car pileup.

Binghamton Mayor Rich David posted dramatic video of a pileup Thursday on New York Route 17. The footage, captured from a vehicle caught in the pileup, shows the second a tractor-trailer pulverizes a car from behind before sideswiping several other vehicles.

Seconds later, a white vehicle that was caught in the wreckage is engulfed in flames. That’s when a man can be seen running into the frame to check on other drivers caught in the wreckage.

It’s not long before other drivers can be seen rushing to the aid of their fellow motorists. One driver tries to open the door of the vehicle that was on fire, and the man first seen running into the chaos comes and douses the flames with a fire extinguisher.

Several drivers then reach into the car and pull the driver out of the vehicle.

David said that the woman suffered only minor cuts and bruises from the crash, and no one was killed in the pileup.

“On behalf of our entire community, I commend these unsung heroes as well as our local police, fire and EMS first responders,” he said. “Binghamton is safer because of you.”

Investigators told the Press & Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton that the wreck was spurred by a tractor-trailer that was unable to stop in time on the roadway, which had additional congestion because of construction.
