NYC Beefs Up Security in Wake of Chelsea Explosion

An additional 1,000 New York State and National Guard troops will patrol transit stations and airports as a precaution after an explosion in Chelsea on Saturday night, Gov. Cuomo said.

"I want New Yorkers to be confident when they go back to work on Monday," Gov. Cuomo said at a Sunday morning press conference at the site of the blast. "I feel comfortable that this additional deployment will do that."

He said MTA is "structurally safe" and that there was no damage to the subway and PATH station in the immediate area of the explosion. However, Cuomo advised commuters to check the transit authority website for updated information on service since some subway entrances are within the crime scene.

Mayor Bill de Blasio urged New Yorkers to be vigilant and said that there would be "substantial" police present throughout the week.

There is no known connection between the Chelsea explosion and international terrorism, Cuomo said. Despite the "nightmare scenario", he encouraged New Yorkers to remain resilient.

"Life will go on in New York, we are not going to let them win. Whoever placed these bombs we will find, and they will be brought to justice."
