FDNY Rescues Hurt Passenger from Cruise Ship on NY Harbor

An FDNY marine unit was called to a cruise ship on the New York Harbor to respond to an injured passenger in a rescue captured by Chopper 4 cameras Friday.

The Norwegian Gem had just left the West Side Marine Terminal to embark on a nine-day trip to the eastern Caribbean when it stopped in the middle of New York Harbor at around 4:30 p.m. due to the injured passenger, authorities say.

According to the cruise company, an elderly man had fallen down the stairs on the ship and lost consciousness.

FDNY Marine 6 responded, pulling up alongside the large ship and going to retrieve the passenger.

Chopper 4 over the scene showed responders taking the passenger out on a stretcher and onto the rescue boat. Two other people traveling with the passenger also came out, along with their belongings.

The FDNY boat traveled to Staten Island, where it docked along Front Street, and the passenger was taken off and shuttled onto an ambulance. He was taken to Richmond University Hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

After a delay of about an hour, the cruise ship continued on its scheduled trip.
