Suspect Did Not Kill Bystander in Labor Day Crown Heights Shooting: Ballistics

It's not clear whether it was a police gun or other firearm.

NYPD ballistics tests have determined that the suspect in the Crown Heights shootout on Labor Day did not kill the 56-year-old woman bystander. It's still not clear whether a police weapon, or some other gun, did.

Denise Gay was found shot to death Monday night while sitting on her stoop. The shootout had erupted nearby after the West Indian Day Parade.

Witnesses told authorities that one of the shootout suspects, LeRoy Webster, had hit her. But ballistics tests indicate that was not the case.

The NYPD alleges that Webster did shoot another man, Eusi Johnson, to death.

Witnesses told police that Johnson also had a weapon. However, none has been found.

There was also a .380-caliber bullet found in the door frame where Gay was shot. It has not been matched with any gun.

The shooting capped a violent holiday weekend in which 67 people were hit by gunfire in shootings around the city.

All those people were shot between 12 a.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday. That includes nine on Friday, 10 on Saturday, 33 on Sunday and 15 on Monday.

Preliminary numbers indicate as many as 10 were killed.

In the police-involved shooting Monday near the parade in Brooklyn, bullet fragments hit one police officer in the left arm and chest. Another officer was grazed by a bullet.

Both officers survived.
