Manlift Crashes Through NYC Apartment Window

A manlift crashed through the window of an apartment building in the Lower East Side and got stuck there after its hydraulics failed Monday evening, officials and witnesses say.

Firefighters responded to 137 Essex St., near Rivington, after the basket of the hydraulic lift tipped over onto the building, the FDNY says.

Neighbor Ritchie Franco, who lives on the first floor, said he walked out to see the manlift tip over and then lean against the window before breaking through it altogether.

Franco said the lift had been there for about a week and a half for brick work to the building's facade. Franco said two wheels on the base of the machine had been slightly lifted off the ground, and even joked with workers earlier that the machine would tip over.

A Department of Buildings representative on scene said a hydraulics failure is being blamed in the incident.
