Court: Lustful NYC Teacher Punished Enough

An appeals court says a 90-day unpaid suspension was punishment enough for a former New York City high school teacher who mused online about her never-consummated longings for a 15-year-old student.

City lawyers said Wednesday they plan to appeal the ruling school officials' lawsuit against Colleen McGraham. The city is pressing for a harsher penalty, though union officials say McGraham has left teaching.

Court records say the then 36-year-old English teacher sent e-mails and posted on a personal blog about her romantic feelings toward a student in 2005. The boy told another teacher at Staten Island's New Dorp High School.

A New York State United Teachers spokesman says McGraham no longer plans to be an educator. The union represented her in the case.
