New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine has made a surprise visit to Iraq to thank Garden State troops for their service.

The governor arrived in Iraq Tuesday and has already visited U.S. troops at Camp Bucca, a prison camp maintained by the U.S. military.

Corzine called the troops at Bucca "a first-class, world-class group of people who are hell-bent on delivering on their mission."

About 3,000 New Jerseyans are in Iraq.

The governor's office says the trip was planned but kept secret because of security concerns.

Corzine is traveling with Govs. Rick Perry of Texas and Chris Gregoire of Washington.

Corzine's last official overseas trip was to Israel in July. He was last in Iraq in late 2006.
