Put the phone down. Drive safely.

Hey drivers, get off the phone!

If the thought of dying in a horrible accident isn't enough to dissuade you, how about the fact that starting tonight at midnight the NYPD will start a 24-hour crackdown on chatty motorists.

It's a $130 fine if you get caught using a hand-held while driving, and police officers will be out in force tonight, looking for verbose violators.

You may think you won't be one of the unlucky ones, but in March the NYPD issued 8,797 summonses during a similar  one-day operation.

During 2008, the NYPD issued on average 536 summonses a day to drivers using hand-held cell phones.
